One is so used to the front page of a newspaper
being full
of the usual political rubbish that when a paper turns an item on an
innovative housewife into a front page story, it makes you wonder. Is
there something wrong with the newspaper? Or is
something wrong with us, that we take it as a matter of course that the cover
page should be filled with disaster stories, cricket news or long winded
reports on the latest political shenanigans.
Almost the first item I came across while reading the DNA this morning was about a young housewife from Chitoor in A.P. who, in the process of resolving the problem of excess wires connected to her husband’s computer, ended up developing a “new age” PC. This computer behaves pretty much like any normal PC but runs on a single cable. The genius behind “Cabtop” as the new computer has been named, is no student from IIT but a high school graduate from a Telegu medium school, her education having ended with the “10 plus 2” programme.
With so many wires and connections, says Bhargavi, it would take her forever to clean her husband’s room, forget all the loose contacts which resulted from her dusting. So she thought of a way to simplify the cleaning and ended up developing a new PC. Encouraged by her family and with the aid of the Department of Science and Industrial Research (DSIR) under the Technopreneur Promotion Programme her brainwave is likely to soon hit the market.

She cooked up a mess proof PCThe second good news story is about a school at Bandra Reclamation where children who are disabled can study together with those with normal faculties. According to Mithu Alur, “It is all about creating a generation without prejudice. To create a sense of belonging and oneness in children facing barriers regardless of gender, race, ability, religion or class”.
